I make the kids do community service around town – like what my parents and grandparents taught us to do. When we were kids – we used to visit the blind and donate to the orphanage. It helps us see other people with a different perspective and also show us how we should appreciate our lives. So when my kids were old enough we visit the old folks home and the sick – because I want my children to learn compassion and also to help others.
My children also learned that those who are sick are very positive for their own future and thus – this brings a new light into their lives too. We’ve visited those with cancer, leukemia, heart disease and malignant Mesothelioma . There are times we just sit and read to them – and other times we bring a movie they want to see – and of course we sit and enjoy the movie with them. A good movie brings them so much joy and one of my kids learned to be patient because of these weekly movie session, she also learned to appreciate other things because these sick folks are so spunky and my kid said to me one day – if they are so full of life – there is no reason why she cannot face school or her friends the same way. Teenage years are hard – I’m just glad I was able to do these community work with my kids.
